Holiday Plumbing Hints and Tips

The holidays are here! With all the hectic shopping, cooking, and other holiday preparations, it’s entirely understandable to forget all about your home plumbing system. However, due to the massive uptick in use your plumbing system is bound to experience this holiday season, it’s incredibly wise to take a little time out of your schedule to take a few precautionary actions. To help you along the way to perfect plumbing preparedness this holiday, read through the following holiday plumbing hints and tips from the experts here at Marti’s Plumbing Service.

1 – Find Your Main Water Shutoff Valve

The first thing you should do during your holiday plumbing preparations is finding your main water shutoff valve. Typically, your shutoff valve will be outside your home on the side facing the street. Once you find yours, make sure you memorize its location. Otherwise, you’ll have a harder time finding it in the event of a plumbing emergency.

Why is finding your shutoff valve so important, you ask? Well, that question is best answered with an example. Let’s assume your Cousin Eddie showed up to your house (uninvited) this holiday season. During his unceremonious visit, he managed to clog your toilet, backing up your main sewer line and flooding your bathroom. Before you scold Ed about his complete lack of tact and start cleaning up his mess, you should head out to your shutoff valve and turn off the water supply to the whole house. Doing so will stop the flood from getting worse, giving you time to kick Ed to the curb and clean up his ungodly mess.

2 – Holiday Plumbing Preparedness for Your Kitchen Sink and Garbage Disposal

Prepare your kitchen sink for the holiday season by:

  • Putting drain screens over all the drains in your home (except the garbage disposal drain)
  • Clean out all your drain traps before cooking your holiday feast and roast beast
  • Take lemon skins and throw them in your garbage disposal to create a sweet, pleasant, wintery aroma

To help prevent a drainage problem this holiday season, avoid putting any of the following items down the drain:

  • Food and food waste
  • Grease, fat, or oil
  • Coffee grounds
  • Eggshells
  • Vegetable skins and/or peels

If you have a garbage disposal, then prepare for the holidays by avoiding putting the following items into the disposal:

  • Bones
  • Celery and other tough, fibrous vegetables
  • Potato peels or vegetable skins
  • Eggshells
  • Coffee grounds
  • Pasta
  • Grease, fat, or oil
  • Fruit pies

3 – Prepare Your Bathroom for the Holidays

Even if you have a dastardly Cousin Eddie in your family, there are a few things you can do to help mitigate the potentially inevitable holiday bathroom catastrophe. All you have to do is inform your guests what does and does not belong in the toilet. For some strange and inexplicable reason, people tend to put a whole slew of things down the toilet during a party that they wouldn’t ever put down their own porcelain thrown. If you don’t know what shouldn’t go down the toilet, then consult the following list:

  • Wet wipes (even the ones that say “flushable”)
  • Paper towels and other paper products (except for toilet tissue)
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Food or food waste
  • Grease, fat, or oil
  • Hair
  • Q-tips (cotton swabs)
  • Facial tissue
